Review
Avast antivirus 4.7 is another addition to the long list of successful antivirus tools developed by Alwil Software Corporation. It’s free software (for personal and non commercial use) provided by Alwil Software (though it requests you to register within 1888 days from the day of installation) to tackle the increasing Internet insecurity problems. It is available in 32 languages!!! The database of Avast is updated at least twice a week, thus giving you a total protection. The best thing about Avast is that its simple, elegant yet powerful. Avast interface is user friendly and comes with many skins developed by its avid fans and users. It offers three types of scanning operation: quick, standard and thorough. It also features three sensitivity levels: disabled, standard and high. You can also scan archive files. You can set (it’s the default setting) it to test memory on start up. You can also change the memory alloted to virus chest and logging enabling you to use your hard disk space efficiently. You can also schedule updates at a given interval of minutes or update it manually.
One of the good things about Avast is that it opens a help file every time you start Avast so for new users it’s easier to work but later on it becomes a nuisance. It provides you with a help button ‘?’, using which you can check what a given button is for. You can scan your hard drives, removable media or any specific folder you wish. On a lighter note, if you want to scan a USB drive you might have to add that with the help of a specific folder button.
Overall, the application is free and effective and definitely scares the viruses away keeping your computer healthy. |
- Protects you with its constantly updated database.
- User friendly interface.
- Different sensitivity levels allow you to monitor your protection level.
- Different scan types allow you to monitor the scan timing. The higher the scan level, the more time it will take to complete the scanning process.
- It also scans archive files so a virus hiding in a zip file can be easily removed.
|
- Its help section popping at the start is a help for new users but a nuisance for regular users.
- The external USB drives can not be selected in removable drives and have to be selected separately.
- Help section has to be searched for as there is no button in the interface for it. Though you can use F1 button for help.
